The Garden Song

Lyrics
I tore up the garden today
I hope you’ll pardon me
Nothing was growing there anyway
It was just decay

And as soon as you calm yourself down
We’ll talk about all our letdowns
And why we believed that this ground
Owed us a thing

The little we gathered, it certainly mattered
To our bodies and our hearts
I tried to tend it, I just couldn’t mend it
I think we’d lost it from the start

And all the earth that we had dug our hands into
It humbled the claim we’d laid down
It needed the pain we’d left out
It said:

I have learned my place now
Why can’t you?
I belong to the patient
I belong to the poor
I belong to the faithless
I belong to the sure
I belong to the simple
I belong to the free
I belong to my children
Those who remember me
I will be found in the silent places
Never found in the mind
I will be found in the morning stillness
To search for me is never to find

I tore up the garden today
It was just decay
